Statewide HBCU Tour Formed by Professor Michelle Alexander
Formed a statewide tour by Professor Michelle Alexander that included stops at Virginia Union University, Virginia State University and Norfolk State University.
At each HBCU, Professor Alexander conducted a formal lecture about her book and mass incarceration and a very intimate question and answer session with students in working to increase awareness about the system of Mass Incarceration in both Virginia and across America.
To extend Professor Alexander’s reach in the local communities, Virginia Alliance also included public lectures in Richmond, in Petersburg and Norfolk which were attended by local pastors, church and community leaders, school children along with others .
Study Session Series Formed
As a follow-up to Professor Alexander’s Central Virginia tour and lecture series, Virginia Alliance formed and conducted a Mass Incarcerations Study Session Series at six Baptist churches in the Central Virginia area.
The series of Mass Incarceration Study Sessions were based on Professor Alexander’s New Jim Crow Study Guide which drilled down on the content of her book in allowing attendees to better understand how the history of mass incarceration has negatively impacted and continues to negatively impact their families, communities and institutions.
Study Session Success
During the Mass Incarceration Study Sessions, hundreds of participants from the six churches and surrounding communities attended.
As enduring recognition of their participation, each participant was awarded a nicely framed certificate as a continuing memento of their efforts and personal enhancement.
